It will be a blast, meeting our friends again....and the start of many drinkin' nights!

The Mississippi Mudsharks...het is nu al wel enkele jaren geleden toen ik de eerste maal Scottie en z'n gang tegenkwam. Hoe het gebeurde weet ik zelfs niet meer maar het zal wel ergens aan de toog zijn geweest onder invloed van al dat lekkere Belgische bier en werd zo de start van een jarenlange vriendschap. Zelfs de bezoeken privé in San Diego en Los Angeles blijven mooie herinneringen. De legendarisch brunch waar Scottie 'Mad Dog' Blinn en Roxanne me 's morgens stevige porties Bloody Mary's lieten drinken met zicht op de oceaan, het weerzien met Greg 'Whiskey Willy' Willis, het diner in de onvergetelijke 'fifties club' de 'Corvette' en het bezoek aan het occulte spookhuis in 'Old Town' San Diego, de bezoeken met Eric 'Jailhouse' Von Herzen aan de Bluesclubs in Orange County waar tergelijker tijd ook een prille vriendschap ontstond met 'Michael 'Pink' Arguello, wie we eerder dit jaar terug mochten ontmoeten met 2000LBS of Blues, het blijft voor altijd gegrift in mijn geheugen en zo zie je maar wat een bezoekje aan een Bluesconcert allemaal teweeg kan brengen.

Nu in september van dit jaar staan de 'Mississippi Mudsharks' aan de start van hun 10de Europese Tour, waarvan zelfs twee in 2004. Al zijn er tijdens die 10 jaar wel enkele veranderingen geweest en werden het optredens van zowel The Mississippi Mud als The Mississippi Mudsharks, toch zagen we telkens Scottie Blinn weer. Het succes dat ze al van in het begin mochten beleven in Duitsland sloeg vrijwel onmiddelijk over op landen als Oostenrijk, Nederland, Zwitserland, Luxemburg en natuurlijk ook naar onze contreien. Er volgden succesvolle optredens in talrijke clubs en op verschillende festivals over gans West-Europa.

Als dank aan hun fans brengen ze in september een volledig nieuwe cd uit die haar 'officiele' voorstelling zal krijgen op Binkom Blues op 20 september 2008. 'The Mississippi Mudsharks' zullen dan ook weer aanwezig zijn als vaste bezetting met Scottie 'Mad Dog' Blinn (guitar & vocals), Eric 'Jailhouse' Von Herzen (bluesharp & vocals), Greg 'Whiskey Willy' Willis (bass) en de 'Amazing' Tom Essa (drums).

'Voodoo Doll' is de titel van hen nieuwste cd en telt 11 nummers gaande van Greasepunk, over rauwe Blues tot stevige Surf.

Openingstrack is meteen ook de titeltrack van de cd. 'Voodoo Doll' is een vettige 'greasepunk' zoals we de Mudsharks al wel een tijdje kennen. Rauw en opzwepend! Ook 'Cholula Got Me' is van hetzelfde allooi en draagt ook een beetje van het occulte voodoo met zich mee. Een opzwepende 'Mississippi Saxophone' vinden we terug op de derde track van dit album. Met 'Preacher' horen we terug Eric op de 'harp' ten voeten uit, krachtig en zoals we hem kennen van bij één van z'n voormalige bands 'Social Distortion'.

'Evil Eye' is er ééntje waar ook ik nu de eerste maal kennis mee maak en de rauwe stem van Scottie, het degelijk harmonicaspel van Eric en een meer dan behoorlijk rhythmsectie met Tom en Greg doen ons bij wijlen terug denken aan Lester Butler's '13'. Opzwepen en iedereen tot dansen aanzettend is zeker 'Runaway Soul' en geeft de sfeer perfect weer waar het bij een 'gig' van de Mudsharks allemaal om draait. Ruig en vettig.

'Pistolero' is een instrumentale surf waar Scottie al een tijdje aan het werken was. Dit is Scottie's ding zoals hij het graag brengt met de 'Tiki Torchers'. Iedereen nu op de dansvloer en laat je maar stevig gaan. Op 'Hammerhead' krijgen onze Mudsharks de steun van Jonny "Two Bags" Wickersham (Social Distortion) die de eerste guitarsolo hier voor zijn rekening neemt en begeven we ons op het pad van de Bluesrock.

Nog gastoptredens zijn er weg gelegd op het zeer aanstekelijk 'Take My baby home'. Joey Harris (The Beat Farmers, Joey Harris & The Mentals) en Jonny "Two Bags" Wickersham (Social Distortion) verzorgen hier ook de 'harmony vocals'.

Met 'The Gravestone Lied' een TexMex met Voodoo attitude, 'Shadow' en 'Son Of A Bitch' sluiten we dit nieuwe album van 'The Mississippi Mudsharks' af en kijken we al uit naar het weerzien en hun met volle overgave gebrachte concerten. Nog even vermelden dat Mighty" Joe Lunga (Joey Harris & The Mentals) op 'Hammerhead' en 'Son Of a Bitch' een Hammond partij geeft en accordion speelt op 'The Gravestone Lied'.

Coming September 2008 the Mississippi Mudsharks will start their 10th European Tour, 2 thereof even took place in the same year 2004. Although some changes occurred during these last 10 years and the band performed under both The Mississippi Mud and The Mississippi Mudsharks names, Scottie Blinn has always been present. Their initial success in Germany soon got repeated in Austria, The Netherlands, Swiss, Luxemburg and logically in our region as well. Successful performances followed in numerous clubs and various festivals all over Western-Europe.
To thank their fans they are bringing out a complete new cd in September, the official presentation thereof will take place at Binkom blues on 20 September 2008. The Mississippi Mudsharks will be there in their prime line-up with Scotty ‘Mad Dog’ Blinn (guitar & vocals), Eric 'Jailhouse' Von Herzen (bluesharp & vocals), Greg 'Whiskey Willy' Willis (bass) and the 'Amazing' Tom Essa (drums).

The opening track is also the title track. ‘Vooddoo Doll’ is a fat ‘greasepunk’, raw and unleashed, as we are used for some time now from the Mudsharks. ‘Cholula Got Me’ is similar in nature and also carries some occult voodoo in it. Third track of this album is the firing up ‘Mississippi Saxophone’. In ‘Preacher’ we hear Eric playing the harp, as powerful as we remember him from one of his former bands ‘Social Distortion’.
New to me is ‘Evil eye’. The raw voice of Scottie, the sound harmonica play by Eric, and the more than decent rhythm section of Tom and Greg reminds me of Lester Butler’s ‘13’. “Runaway Soul” gets you fired up and dancing, perfectly recreating the typical Mudsharks ‘gig’ atmosphere, raw and greasy.
‘Pistolera’ is an instrumental surf  wich Scotty had been working on for a while. This is Scottie’s thing, as he likes to play with the ‘Tiki Torchers’. Everybody on the dance floor now and let go! Moving into Bluesrock territory with ‘Hammerhead’ our Mudsharks got the support of Jonny “Two Bags” Wickersham (Social Distortion), who took first guitar solo for his account.
Other guest appearances can be heard in the entailing ‘Take my baby home’ in which Joey Harris (The Beat Farmers, Joey Harris & The Mentals) and Jonny “Two Bags” Wickersham (Social Distortion) perform the ‘harmony vocals’.
‘The Gravestone Lied’, ‘Shadow’ and ‘Son of a Bitch’ conclude this Mississippi Mudshark’s album and we are already looking forward to meet them again at their concerts, performing with plenty of musical devotion. Still mention that Mighty" Joe Lunga (Joey Harris & The Mentals) plays the Hammond on Hammerhead as well on ‘Son Of A Bitch’, on The Gravestone Lied’ the TexMex with a Voodoo attitude he’s playing an accordion.
